Family Tree: Osama bin Laden's wives, sons and daughters

Amal al-Sadah was 18 years when she was abducted from Yemen, taken to Pakistan enroute to Kandahar in Afghanistan where the bridegroom-in-waiting Osama bin Laden, 43, met her. They were quietly married in 2000. She was the one who resisted his capture on May 1 by the US Navy SEALs and was shot in her leg, while bin Laden was killed.

Otherwise, bin Laden was first married at the age of 17 to a cousin, Najwa Ghanem, who was about two years younger to him. They had 11 children. Najwa, who was with him in Afghanistan, left abruptly few days before 9/11 attacks.

Bin Laden's second wife was Khadijah Sharif, nine years older than him, an educated woman with lineage to the Prophet. They married in 1983 and had three children, but she divorced him when bin Laden was living in Sudan in the 1990s.

In fact, Bin Laden's first wife Najwa helped arrange his third marriage, to Khairiah Sabar, a doctorate in Islamic sharia. She married bin Laden in 1985 and they had a child. She was not heard of after 2001 raids on bin Laden's hideouts in Afghanistan.

His fourth wife, Siham Sabar, married him in 1987 and they had four children, and like the third wife, she has not been heard of since the U.S. invasion of Afghanistan.

Bin Laden's fifth marriage was in 2000, few months before the 9/11 attacks with Amal al-Sadah from Yemen and their daughter was born after the attacks. "I became a father of a girl after September 11," he said. "I named her after Safiyah who killed a Jewish spy at the time of the Prophet. (My daughter) will kill enemies of Islam like Safiyah," bin Laden was reported to have told Pakistani journalist Hamid Mir.
